Abaixo a Monarquia: liderança política e propaganda republicana em Pelotas-RS (1880-1889).

Abstract

The research theme is the republican propaganda in the city of Pelotas, between the 1880 and 1889 years, from the acting of a number of followers of republicanism in the city. The working paper aims firstly at analyzing the profile of individuals who have been ahead of the movement, as well as the different political triumphs that this group obtained after the Republic had been proclaimed in the country. Our focus also relies on the range of social relations in which some republicans were inserted, as well as the important family role for the success in the political life of those individuals. And, lastly, the adherence to new ideas which were circulating in Brazil in the final years of the XIX century, mainly the ones related to the emancipation and abolition of slaves, the federalism and the own understanding of republicanism. The use of prosopography, and the notions of social networking and family strategy are some of the theoretical and methodological basis which allow the execution of this investigation, and thus implementing a research aligned with a social history of politics.
