Abstract

The present study aims to analyze the development of the thought of Augustine of Hippo (354-430) on the conceptual interrelationship around divine grace and the free will of the will. Through three specific writings from the anti-Pelagian period, we will seek to highlight the Augustinian philosophical perspective on the operation of grace with a view to freedom from the will of the will. To achieve the objective of this investigation, a synthesis on the history of original sin in the Latin tradition, its conceptual design and the theoretical impact of this doctrine on Augustinian moral philosophy will be presented. In a second step, there will be an approach to the theme of grace when analyzing the effects of sin on the will of the will. In this aspect, the moral problems related to the perversion of the will will be analyzed. Then, observing the general lines of the Augustinian doctrine on grace, different aspects of divine operation will be listed in the volitional sphere of the human being and how the process of freedom of the agency of the will develops. Augustine believes that if the effective action of grace finds the full disposition of the will, it will result in the true freedom of the human being. Therefore, the sum of this work will point out the reasons that justify the Augustinian defense that the moral agent can only enjoy the privilege of freedom, if his will works in cooperation with the help of grace.
