As representações da cidade de Pelotas nas crônicas de Alberto Coelho da Cunha (1853-1939).

Abstract

The dissertation discusses the use of a peculiar source for the study of history. Chronicle is a genre of literature popularized in the twentieth century with the emergence of the press. Its production is linked to the periodicals, it is made to soon be consumed, being brief and customarily it approaches sensitive subjects from the perspective of the urban representations. Alberto Coelho da Cunha (1853-1939), during his 41 years as a public servant, played an important role in recording the history of the city of Pelotas. He devoted himself to writing, as a chronicler, for newspaper columns, the urban and rural daily life of the city where he sees the accentuation of traits and characteristics of industrialization. It is in this scenario of changes and transformations, in the passage from the city “moved by charque to the city ruled by the clock of industrialization” (LONER, 2001), that the writer produces his set of chronicles called "Antigualhas de Pelotas". The research develops from the analysis of the chronicles produced by Alberto, today, safeguarded in the Bibliotheca Publica Pelotense (BPP), composing the Documentary Fund Alberto Coelho da Cunha, in order to contribute with the studies about the city of Pelotas of the twentieth century.
