Do Nhamandu Mirim ao Nhe'e Amba: um reestudo etnomusicológico de um repertório Mbya Guarani

Abstract

The Mbya Guarani are a Guarani-speaking indigenous subgroup that corresponds to a significant amount of the Latin American indigenous population, particularly that situated in the South and Southeast regions of Brazil. In the year of 2002, ethnologist Walmir Pereira (director of the Rio Grande do Sul Anthropological Museum then) and historian Paula Caleffi, a member of the post-graduate program in History at the Sinos River Valley University (UNISINOS) at the time, were the first to record the Mbya Guarani music in the state, especially that produced by the Mbya in the tekoa Nhundy (Campo Aberto Village), located in the city of Viamão, resulting in the phonographic piece Yvy Ju – The Path of the Land Without Evil. Fourteen years afterwards, this work returns to the same place and theme in order to examine which aspects have changed and which have remained the same in the group’s musical tradition. The notes in this ethnomusicological and ethnographic restudy aim at understanding how the Mbya Guarani make sense of their musical expressions and how they perceive the diachronic and synchronic aspects in their performances
